Web Page Background Photographs It is always going to be a compromise displaying a fixed proportion background photograph on a PC screen, let alone phones or tablets.... The image size I used for the background photograph below was 1366 x 800 pixels and is represented by the cream area. Your picture needs to be able to loose some height and have its main interest to the right of the picture so avoiding the menu text.
The reason I chose 1366*800 as the picture size was because it was a compromise between current PC screens.
Initially I used the HTML tag of <BODY BACKGROUND> which normally repeats the background picture all over the screen, so a particular size needs to be used to get the best effect - hence 1366*800 pixels. This works for "normal" size screens but is not really satisfactory for anything else. I then discovered this piece in Quakit.com, where clever coding causes the background picture to fit what ever "shape" your browser window is using. You can get some very strange effects by adjusting the browser window to tall and narrow or short and wide but if the window is to more or less "normal" proportions then a reasonable result is achieved. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who looks at the PMFC pages on a phone or on an exceptionally large screen if they find the appearance of the background photograph unsatisfactory.
